STEAM and Civility: COSI Launches a New Learning Lunchbox

On April 9, 2025, the Center of Science and Industry (COSI) unveiled its John Glenn Inspiration Learning Lunchbox, a new hands-on science kit that helps students explore STEAM concepts while also learning the value of civility and civic engagement. The kit pays tribute to astronaut and U.S. Senator John Glenn, whose legacy of exploration, leadership, and public service continues to inspire generations.

The kit debuted at a special launch event at the National Veterans Memorial and Museum in Columbus, OH, where approximately 25 eighth-grade students from Champion Middle School were be among the first to explore its interactive lessons.

A Powerful Tribute

“Senator John Glenn showed us that exploration knows no boundaries—whether in space or in how we engage with one another as citizens,” said Dr. Frederic Bertley, COSI President & CEO. “Through this innovative Learning Lunchbox, we’re connecting STEAM education with civic engagement in a way that truly exemplifies our belief that science is everywhere and for everyone. By blending hands-on experiments with lessons in respectful dialogue, we’re empowering young people to become both scientific thinkers and thoughtful citizens who can tackle tomorrow’s challenges with the same courage and commitment that defined Glenn’s remarkable legacy.”

Developed as part of COSI’s award-winning Learning Lunchbox program, the John Glenn Inspiration Kits blend hands-on STEAM experiments with activities that promote empathy, leadership, and respectful discourse. It offers seven immersive experiences including launching rockets, mapping orbits, learning about effective speech and communication, and writing to elected representatives.

Bending Science and Civility

As part of the launch event, students from Champion Middle School were paired with college mentors from The Ohio State University’s John Glenn College of Public Affairs. These mentors served as relatable role models, guiding students as they applied civil discourse, compassion, and problem-solving to real-world scenarios. Students also got the opportunity to engage with current elected leaders, reinforcing the idea that young voices have the power to shape the future.

“John Glenn believed deeply in the power of science, service, and civility for others. This new Inspiration Learning Lunchbox Kit honors that legacy by inviting young minds to dream big, stay curious, and engage with the world around them. Through our partnership with COSI, we’re proud to help carry forward Senator Glenn’s vision—making STEAM learning accessible, exciting, and rooted in the spirit of discovery he championed,” added Trevor Brown, Dean, John Glenn College of Public Arts at The Ohio State University.

By integrating STEAM learning with civic engagement and respectful dialogue, COSI aims to prepare the next generation to be not just innovators—but thoughtful, informed individuals.

Since launching the Learning Lunchbox program in 2020, COSI has distributed nearly 400,000 kits to children and families across the country and world. The Learning Lunchboxes include direct links to Dr. B in 3 videos—an animated series that teaches science concepts in under five minutes. Some feature a Digital STEAM Portal—a mobile video player where students can explore Dr. B in 3 episodes alongside hands-on activities, creating an immersive and interactive learning experience.
